With plans to build a hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the US, Toyota president Akio Toyoda announced that their new 2016 Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will be coming to California next year with a $57,500 price tag. Interested buyers will also be treated to state and federal incentives worth a total of $13,000, drastically knocking the price down to under $45,000. The 2016 Mirai can also be leased for only $499 a month for 36 months (with $3,649 due at signing). Whether it’s purchased or leased, the Miria comes with a huge added bonus, up to 3 years of FREE hydrogen fuel.

Unfortunately, California residents will only have a limited supply to choose from, with less than 200 vehicles being made available in the fourth quarter. Toyota has plans to build fuel cell infrastructures in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island to support the launch, which Toyota says will help put up to 3,000 Mirai’s on the road by the end of 2017.

Toyoda said, “For [Toyota], this isn’t just another car. This is an opportunity – an opportunity to really make a difference. And making a difference is what Toyota is all about.” In Japanese, Mirai (未来) means “future,” which is hopefully where the auto industry will go in years to come.
